Academic leaders of the university convened for two and a half days to acquaint themselves with good practices and models of academic content and administration in premiere universities including UP, with the aim of being emboldened to make necessary changes in their units.

The Academic Leadership Conference, organized by the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs (OVPAA) and the Office of International Linkages (OIL), was held from March 9 to 11, 2015 at Taal Vista Hotel, Tagaytay City.

It was attended by UP System officials, directors under the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs (OVPAA), chancellors, vice chancellors, deans, institute directors and department chairs.

Resource speakers were academic leaders of the National University of Singapore, University of Maryland, University of New South Wales, Seoul National University, and UP. International leadership and change management experts were also invited to give insights.

President Alfredo Pascual set the tone for the conference with his welcome remarks. To pursue excellence and relevance, he encouraged the participants to make changes and big decisions in the leadership components that UP is working on: course content, pedagogy, incentive structure, and sustainability.

According to the OVPAA, it has become imperative for UP to make “infrastructural and cultural changes” in academic life “given the rapidly evolving internationalized landscape coupled with the rise and infusion of technology in education.”

The OVPAA also mentioned the ongoing review of policies directly affecting the faculty and research staff: criteria for promotion and tenure, schemes for compensation, awards and incentives, and strategies for continuity and invigoration of academic leaders and leadership.

According to the OVPAA website, the ALC was inspired by the ongoing Temasek Foundation-National University of Singapore Programme on Developing University Leaders and Educators (TF-NUS DULE). Partly funded by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and carried out by TF-NUS jointly with the OVPAA, the program involves UP academic leaders plus six leading higher education institutions and state universities and colleges selected by CHED.
