Opulencia gets UNESCO-ASM travel award

Prof. Rina Bagsik-Opulencia of the Institute of Biological Sciences (IBS), College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), a recipient of the UNESCO-American Society for Microbiology (ASM) Travel Award, reported back for duty after a three-month research stint at the Department of Microbiology and Parasitology of the University of Queensland, Australia.

Her research project, which stemmed from the project of Dr. Asuncion K. Raymundo, focused on the sequencing of a repetitive element found in Ralstonia solanacearum from Philippine banana. This would help determine the correlation of this repetitive element to host specificity.

She also worked on the phylogenetic analysis of Philippine isolates of R. solanacearum. This would determine the relatedness of R. solanacearum isolates from different hosts and from different geographical locations.

She worked in the laboratory of Dr. Mark Fegan and her research was partially financed by the Cooperative Research Centre for Plant Protection of the University of Queensland. (MMS Tuason)
