CMC
to offer M.A. in Film
Effective November 2002, the UP College of Mass Communication
(CMC) will offer the M.A. in Film degree under the Media Studies program.
The program combines theory and production courses in film as well as
in media studies.
Courses offered in film are in the areas of production
and post-production, digital content creation, film theory and criticism,
scriptwriting, documentary, narrative film, Filipino film genres and
auteurs, historical and critical research methods, Filipino film industry,
cinema and nation, and film studies seminar. The Media Studies courses
are media theory, media literacy, media ethics, media research and political
economy of media.
The film program joins three existing programs
M.A. Media Studies (Broadcasting), M.A. Media Studies (Journalism),
and M.A. Communication (Communication Research).
CMC has also been offering since 1984 the only four-year
undergraduate Bachelors degree program in Film in the Philippines.

Museum holds Grand Malang Draw
In support of the U.P. Jorge B. Vargas Museum and Filipiniana
Research Centers Renovation Projects, the artist Malang donated
100 artworks for an exclusive raffle of his works on view from August
19 to 24. The Grand Draw was held on August 24 in celebration of the
112th birthday of the late Jorge B. Vargas, donor of U.P.s art,
Filipiniana and memorabilia museum. Each ticket guaranteed holders to
win one of Malangs works. The grand prize, Flower Vendor,
went to Elizabeth Cowper of Pasig City.

NISMED goes on the air
for the second time
The UP National
Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development (UP NISMED)
has ventured into using radio to deliver instruction for elementary
and secondary schools science teachers and the general public with the
airing of Titsers Iskul on the Air from August 4 to
November 20. The program is a 15-minute segment of DZMMs 3-5 p.m.
regular Sunday program Bago Yan Ah!, a science discovery
program broadcast simultaneously over DYAB Cebu and DXAB Davao.
Titsers
Iskul is a distance education type course where teachers listen
to the program for 16 Sundays. It starts with a drama to introduce the
lesson, followed by a discussion of the science concepts and curriculum
entry points by a resource person. Each lesson ends with a question.
A face-to-face training for one day will be scheduled for the enrollees
to reinforce the aired lessons.
The project is
being supported by DZMM and the Science Education Institute-Department
of Science and Technology, in cooperation with the Department of Education,
University of San Carlos-Regional Science Teaching Center (RSTC) Cebu,
and Ateneo de Davao University RSTC. Preparations for the second course
are underway.
Last year, UP NISMED aired Radyo Eskwela sa Science at Math
over DZMM on selected topics on Philippine folk science. (UP NISMED)

graduates first batch
of PhDs in education
Nine Ph.D.s in education received their diplomas at the UP Open University
6th Commencement Exercises on August 24 at the UP Los Baños D.L.
Umali Hall. All scholars of the Department of Science and Technology
Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI), the nine students composed the
first batch of UPOU Ph.D.s in education.
The new Ph.D.s, all of them teaching in various universities and
colleges in the country, came from the UPOU learning centers, two from
UP Diliman and seven from the University of San Carlos in Cebu. They
are: Gabino P. Petilos from Leyte Normal University; Rodigelio F. Alfonso,
Western Mindanao State University; Josephine Alba, University of Nueva
Caceres; Estrella S. Placides, Catanduanes State College; Janette Supremo,
University of Southern Mindanao; Carla B. Torre, Western Visayas State
University; Jocelyn R. Locaylocay, University of San Carlos; and Grace
Vicente from Notre Dame of Marbel University. Mr. Petilos, a mathematics
major, got the highest general weighted average among the graduates.
The UPOU Ph.D. in Education program aims to upgrade the capabilities
of the Regional Science Teaching Centers (RSTCs) and other teacher education
institutions (TEIs). Through the distance education program, Ph.D. in
education major in biology and in chemistry is available in the regions.It
is being offered in cooperation with the UP Diliman College of Education,
the De La Salle University, and the Ateneo de Manila University and
with funding support from SEI-DOST.
The UPOU graduated a total of 173 this year. Joining the nine Ph.D.s
in education were: 24 others who took the Diploma in Language Studies
for Teachers; 29, Diploma in Science Teaching; 9, Diploma in Social
Studies Education; 22, Diploma in Environment and Natural Resources
Management; 6, Diploma in Computer Science; 23, Master in Public Management;
23, Master of Professional Studies in Development Communication; and
12, Master of Public Health.
This years graduates came from the UPOU learning centers in Cagayan
State University, Davao Oriental State College of Science and Technology,
Department of Education in Misamis Occidental, Eastern Samar State College,
Marinduque State College, Universidad de Sta Isabel, University of San
Carlos, UP College Cebu, UP College Tacloban, UP Diliman, UP Los Baños,
UP Manila, UP Mindanao, UP Visayas and Urios College.
Of the 173 graduates, 28 received scholarships from the Civil Service
Commission, Congressmen Edgar Lara and Joaquin Chipeco Jr., Department
of Education, International Rice Research Institute, and DOST-SEI. (UPOU)

in 17th Asian intl art exhibition
Former UP College of Fine Arts (UPCFA) dean Nestor Vinluan and Department
of Studio Arts chair Benjie Cabangis join this years Philippine
selection for the l7th Asian International Art Exhibition which opened
on August 22 and runs until September 22 at the Daejeon Municipal Museum
of Art in Korea. Organized by the Federation of Asian Artists Philippine
Committee, the exhibition is a way of recognizing the artists years
of hard work and commitment to maintaining and expanding artistic bridges
with fellow artists in the region. Directories Philippines Corporation
