director is 2002 outstanding microbiologist
Dr. Virginia L. Barraquio, associate professor and director
of the Dairy Training and Research Institute (DTRI), is this years
Philippine Society for Microbiology, Inc. (PSM) outstanding microbiologist.
The award was conferred during the societys 31st annual convention
last May 9-11.
The award is in recognition of her accomplishments and major contributions
in the fields of microbiology, biotechnology and food science and technology.
To her credit are 10 technical papers in international refereed journals,
20 in local refereed journals as well as 37 semi-technical manuals and
instructional materials on microbiological quality control of milk and
milk products, milk processing, chemistry, microbiology and milk protein
functionality. She is one of the awardees of the 2001 International
Publication Award from the UP System. Her expertise is continuously
being sought by other agencies where she serves in various capacities.
Among these, she was FAO technical consultant for developing countries
in Indonesia, member of the technical working group that recommended
the passage of the National Dairy Development Act of 1995, and critic
of several food microbiology publications. She is at present a member
of the National Ruminants R & D Team of PCARRD, the Technical Review
Committee of the Philippine Carabao Center, and the Department of Agriculture-Bureau
of Agricultural Researchs National Core Planning Team for Livestock
and Poultry. She also sits in the board of directors of the National
Dairy Authority.
Dr. Barraquio is a member of numerous scientific and honor societies
and was elected as a diplomate in the Philippine Academy of Microbiology.
She was also a recipient of a SEARCA Professorial Chair and the Carnation
Best Paper Award on Dairy Production and Technology. (SM Flores)
