New
books from OVCRD
The UP Diliman
Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Development (OVCRD) launched
on 3 September four books that will add to the existing literature on
folk theater, poverty alleviation policies, abortion, and the writings
of Jose Rizal. Launched were Studies in Pre-war Sugbuanon Theater by
Wilhelmina A. Ramas, Readings in Governance of Poverty Alleviation by
Victoria A. Bautista, May Gawa na Kaming Natapos Dini: Si Rizal at ang
Wikang Tagalog by Nilo S. Ocampo, and Unsafe Abortion in the Philippines:
A Threat to Public Health by Corazon Raymundo, Zelda Zablan, Josefina
Cabigon, Grace Cruz, and Clarinda Berja.
Studies in Pre-war
Sugbuanon Theater is the first in a continuing series of studies on
the elements of Sugbuanon theater. It is a collection of folk dramas
presented in Sugbuanon and translated into English by Dr. Ramas, Professor
Emeritus at the Department of English and Comparative Literature. The
dramas, ranging from serious and reflective to comic and musical, embody
the charm of early Sugbuanon theater and represent the first important
dramatists in the history of Sugbuanon theater: Sotto, Rodriguez, and
Kabahar. Other works of Dr. Ramas include Philippine Drama: Philippine
Plays in Six Philippine Languages, which was co-authored with five other
UP professors.
In Readings in
Governance of Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Bautista puts together nine articles
on the formulation, planning, implementation and monitoring/evaluation
of poverty alleviation programs in the Philippines. Among the programs
discussed were the MBN approach, first implemented during the Ramos
administration, and the KALAHI Program, the response of the Arroyo administration
to poverty alleviation. Dr. Bautista, a professor at the National College
of Public Administration and Governance (NCPAG) is the author of Combating
Poverty through the Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social
Services.
The first comprehensive
and integrated study on the subject in the Philippines, Unsafe Abortion
in the Philippines: A Threat to Public Health narrates the accounts
of women who have undergone abortion, as well as the perceptions, attitudes,
and practices of service providers and other actors in the abortion
picture. The book reveals new findings on abortion methods and procedures,
and on the motives for and consequences of abortion. It also delves
on abortion-related issues, such as family planning. The book is written
by Dr. Raymundo, with contributions from colleagues at the Population
Institute.
In May Gawa na
Kaming Natapos Dini: Si Rizal at ang Wikang Tagalog, Dr. Ocampo offers
a fresh look at the national hero, Jose rizal. The book showcases the
works of Rizal in the Tagalog language, including his correspondences
on and articles about Tagalog in German, Spanish and French. In the
book, Rizal is portrayed as a Filipino who was trained in foreign languages,
but who never forgot his native tongue. A professor at the Department
of Filipino and Philippine literature, the author also wrote and translated
Rizal: Makabayan at Martir, Etikang Tagalog: Ang Ikatlong Nobela ni
Rizal, and Istilo Ko: Rizal Romantik.
