Memorandum No. PAEP 16-67: Invitation to become Research & Extension Fellows of the new UP Resilience Institute

I. Background/Purpose
The Board of Regents at its 1319th Meeting on 28 July 2016 approved the establishment of the new UP Resilience Institute (RI) or Resilience Institute of the University of the Philippines for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management, which shall have the following functions and programs concerning multi-hazard, multi-disciplinary, multi-sectoral, comprehensive DRRM.
1) Research and Creative Work: undertake policy research, action research, and interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary research or creative work;
2) Knowledge Sharing: disseminate research findings, creative works and innovations;
3) Education: establish non-degree educational programs and support degree programs within the UP System;
4) Institution Building: improve the capability of the UP System …

UP System-supported research projects give year-end reports

A total of 23 research projects were presented to the public at the 2016 Research Symposium of the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs (OVPAA) held on November 28, 2016 at the National Institute of Physics, National Science Complex, UP Diliman.

The University of the Philippines Center for Integrative and Development Studies (CIDS) will host the Fourth President’s Toast on 28 October 2016, Friday, 2:00 to 4:00 in the afternoon at the Bahay ng Alumni, University of the Philippines Diliman, Quezon City.

Let me first congratulate the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) for organizing this Second Manila Conference on the South China Sea. This could not have come at a better time as it follows the triumph of our country in the arbitration case against China over the West Philippine Sea.
Now I move on to my task of officially closing this two-day event. I am thankful to Prof. Charmaine Misalucha-Willoughby for providing a succinct summary of the conference proceedings.

SC decision on Bt eggplant brings ‘rays of hope’ to UP scientists, agri stakeholders

According to UP Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA) Gisela P. Concepcion, the recent decision of the Philippine Supreme Court to dismiss the Petition for Writ of Continuing Mandamus and Writ of Kalikasan with Prayer for Issuance of a Temporary Environmental Protection Order (TEPO) that first stopped the field testing of Bt eggplant in 2013 brought “rays of hope” to UP researchers, as well as to stakeholders in the feed miller and livestock/poultry industries.

UP researchers among ‘Philippines Promising Star’ awardees

Nine researchers from the University of the Philippines were among twelve who were recognized in The Philippines Promising Star Awards 2016. The awardees were chosen for their research works in broad fields of studies which cover social science, computer science, clinical medicine, plant and animal science, neuroscience and behavior, economics and business, molecular biology and genetics, materials science, and environment and ecology.

PH and US researchers: Luzon hosts highest concentration of unique mammals

Two UP Biology researchers were part of the US–Philippine team which undertook the 15 year study that showed 93% of Luzon Island’s land mammals are found nowhere else
