Romualdez bares great inequity in the country's state of health

Delivering a lecture to celebrate the centennial of the University of the Philippines, Dr. Alberto G. Romualdez, Jr., former Secretary of the Department of Health (DOH), took the opportunity to decry “great disparities in health status and access to health services between the rich minority and the poor majority of Filipinos.”
UPM must gear itself toward health sector reforms -- Domingo

UP Manila has kept faith with its mission as the country’s Health Sciences Center, but now it must participate more actively in reforming the health sector to reduce inequity and ensure better health access for the masses. This was the main point raised by Dr. Ernesto O. Domingo, University Professor Emeritus and former UPM chancellor, in his UP Centennial Lecture “UP Manila: Created out of a vision, is it fulfilling its mission?” held on September 18, 2008 at the UPMASA Science Hall, Philippine General Hospital, UP Manila.
W. David warns UPLB against spreading itself too thin

On September 26, 2008, former UP Los Baños (UPLB) Chancellor Wilfredo David bared his assessment of the constituent university in his UP Centennial lecture “Reassessing UPLB’s commitment to excellence, academic freedom, and social responsibility,” which he delivered at the new College of Arts and Sciences Auditorium of UPLB.

On September 9, 2008, Dr. Emerlinda R. Roman, in a Centennial Professorial Chair lecture delivered at the UP Diliman (UPD) College of Business Administration (CBA), spelled out the role of the UP faculty in the University in the context of UP’s new charter. The University is clearly not going to do more of the same, Roman said.

On its 1236th meeting on September 29, 2008, the UP Board of Regents approved the appointment of Dr. Minda J. Formacion as the new chancellor of the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) replacing Dr. Glenn D. Aguilar after he served a three-year term. A former Dean of the UPV College of Arts and Sciences, Formacion will formally start her chancellorship on November 1, 2008 until October 31, 2011.

“As photography and filmmaking become more technologically powerful, they also allow us to construct our memories, preserve our experiences, and imagine our future with more clarity and precision…. [It is hoped] that the photographs and films in this competition will allow us to see UP in different, new lights,” UP President Emerlinda R. Roman remarked during the awards ceremony of the UP Centennial Digital Filmmaking and Photography Competition on September 23 at the UP Film Institute (UPFI) in Diliman.

Through the UP Diliman (UPD) College of Music, the UP Centennial Songwriting Competition held its Final Performance Competition Night on September 23, 2008, at the UPD Abelardo Hall Auditorium. The competition’s theme, “Looking Back to Look Forward: 100 Years of Excellence” or “Pagbabalik-Tanaw Tungo sa Pagpupunyagi: Isang Daang Taong Kadalubhasaan” recalled UP’s struggles and triumphs.
Nat'l Artist calls for a comprehensive Philippine literary history

“What our times demand is a comprehensive Philippine literary history before globalization finally erases Filipino culture.”

This was one of the bold assertions National Artist for Literature and member of the UP Institute of Creative Writing (ICW) advisory board Prof. Bienvenido Lumbera made during his lecture “Ang Panitikang ng mga Rehiyon at ang Kasaysayang Pampanitikan.”

In an exuberant week, the UP College of Mass Communication (CMC) celebrated the receipt of several donations for the renovation and construction of the College’s facilities. UP President Emerlinda Roman attended all the events and reiterated the University’s heartfelt gratitude.
UP Singing Ambassadors win big in international competitions
The UP Singing Ambassadors, one of the finest Filipino choirs today, has returned from a successful sixth European tour held from May 19 to September 22. They won five grand prize qualifications, two grand prizes, seven first prizes, and three third prizes in five international choral competitions.
UP Press wins Gintong Aklat Awards
Two UP Press titles were honored at the Gintong Aklat Awards 2008 ceremony held at the SMX Convention Center on September 12, 2008 during the 29th Manila International Book Fair. A Guide to Families of Common Flowering Plants in the Philippines, written by Irma Remo Castro, won in the Natural Science category, Naglalayag: Silent Passage by Irma Dimaranan was cited in the Literature category.
Filipino scholar receives prestigious Harvard fellowship
The internationally acclaimed W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research at Harvard University recently announced the award of a prestigious fellowship to E. San Juan Jr., a Filipino scholar and writer, for Spring 2009.

Two years before national elections, some local government officials are already calling for the active and vigilant involvement of the youth in the electoral process and in the crusade against traditional politics. In the forum Mabuting Pamamahala at Etikal na Paniminuno held at the National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education and Development (UP-NISMED) Auditorium on September 23, 2008, Governors Teodoro Baguilat of Ifugao, Grace Padaca of Isabela, Ed Panlilio of Pampanga, and Mayors Jesse Robredo of Naga City and Sonia Lorenzo of San Isidrio, Nueva Ecija were invited to share their strategies and ethical standards in local governance.

Lab set up to detect trace metals and rare earth elements

The much-awaited Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) laboratory of the UP Diliman‘s National Institute of Geological Sciences (NIGS) will soon open. NIGS Director Carlo Arcilla said that, while the room is ready, the equipment has yet to be released to the institute by the Bureau of Customs. The P8-million laboratory was made possible through a grant from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).
Geo book by alumnus out
The Geological Society of the Philippines (GSP) recently released Lexicon of Philippine Stratigraphy 2008 written by geologist Rolando E. Peña. The book updates and augments the first Philippine stratigraphic guide written by Juan S. Teves in 1956, and is a new standard reference for preparing geologic maps and correlating stratigraphic units or rock layers in the country.
UP professors' works on mangroves recognized

The international scientific and environmental community recently recognized three programs to protect mangrove forests designed by UP professors Rene Rollon, Maricar Samson, and Jurgenne Primavera. Their work on mangroves has widely been quoted by several environmental groups as a basis for the creation of better programs for mangrove restorations worldwide.
UP Baguio constituents rally to save forest park
Led by Chancellor Priscilla Macansantos and Bishop Carlito Cenzon, more than a thousand students, faculty members, administrative personnel, and administration officials of UP Baguio marched from campus on September 3, 2008 to form a human chain around the 1.4 hectare forested area adjacent to the Baguio Convention Center to protest the increasing corporate greed and environmental degradation manifesting itself in the City of Pines.
UP tankers place 2nd and 3rd in the 71st UAAP swim competition

After several turbulent days of intense competition, the UP Men’s Swimming Team lost the UAAP championship to the UST Tiger Sharks, placing second runner-up in the men’s swimming division. The UP Women’s Team on the other hand forfeited their chance to win the title to Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) and was instead first runner-up.

The UP Lady Fighting Maroons were the first runners-up for the Women’s Basketball Division of the 71st Season of the UAAP after a recently held do-or-die championship series with the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws at the San Juan Arena.
