The representation of indigenous peoples (IPs) in Philippine law was the overarching theme of a series of papers delivered during a UP Centennial lecture titled “The Regulation of Our Identities: Indigenous Peoples and the Enigma of Legal Representation” held on October 2 at Malcolm Hall in UP Diliman (UPD), webcast and beamed live to UP constituent campuses. |

On October 29, 2008, in ceremonies held at Malcolm Hall in UP Diliman, the University conferred upon United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon a doctorate of laws honoris causa. The honorary degree was given to him in recognition of his efforts in peace-building and peace-keeping, human development, poverty reduction, denuclearization, and protection and preservation of the environment. |

Ten named UP Scientists for 2008

In ceremonies held on October 22 at the Executive House in UP Diliman, the University conferred the title of UP Scientist upon ten professors. Seven were named Scientist I and three were named Scientist II. The awarding of these titles is part of the UP Scientific Productivity System (SPS). |

On October 22, the University recognized three UP Diliman professors for their outstanding work as scholars and educators: Professors Raul C. Navarro, Florentino C. Sumera, and Roberto G. Paulino. They were honored as part of the UP System’s Academic Distinction Program. |

UP helps agriculture department build capacity

The UP SEAMEO (Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization) Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA), along with the UPEcon Foundation Inc. (UPecon), the University of the Asia and the Pacific School of Management (UA&P SMN), and the Ateneo School of Government (ASOG), entered into an agreement with the Department of Agriculture (DA) for a capacity building program aimed at long-term farm sector productivity. |

The proposed framework reflects the vision and goals for basic education to develop Filipino students’ scientific literacy as well as motivate more of them to pursue a career in science and technology and engineering. |

UPLB says no to House Bill 1143

In a statement released on November 10, 2008, UP Los Baños (UPLB) said that House Bill 1143 could lead to the fragmentation of the Mt. Makiling Forest Reserve, as the area that is to be awarded to the Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP) will be isolated from the entire reserve, which UPLB is mandated by Republic Act 6967 to administer and control. |

25% of RP’s coral species face extinction, says marine biologist

“One-fourth of the listed coral species in the Philippines is vulnerable to extinction,” declared Dr. Wilfredo Y. Licuanan in an interview with the UP Newsletter (UPN). Licuanan is adjunct researcher at the UP Diliman Marine Science Institute (MSI), and professor of biology and head of the Br. Alfred Shields Marine Station, De La Salle University, Manila. |

UP places 3rd in initial UAAP rankings

The University of the Philippines currently places third in overall standings in the 71st season of the UAAP with 76 points, while UST is at the top spot with 103 points, followed by De La Salle University with 79 points. |
