The relatively small UP campus in Cebu or the UP Visayas Cebu College appears to have the biggest problem with informal settlers among UP campuses, a recent report of the Commission on Audit (COA) on the University of the Philippines System reveals.

Two giant multinational companies, Toyota and Hitachi, and a taipan are tying up with the university through separate donations of a multimillion-dollar building and equipment. National news also reported in August about university partnerships with the Philippine National Oil Company, the Griffith University of Australia, and the Office of the Ombudsman.

Varsity athletes have more reason to be happy this UP Centennial Year. Not only is UP hosting this University Athletics Association of the Philippines season, it also acquired a new bus for its varsity teams.
UPLB begins construction of "wonder building"

Being environmentally friendly and at the same time urban is possible, as the UPLB College of Economics and Management (CEM) will soon prove with the construction of the new Rural Economic Development and Renewable Energy Center (RED REC), a “wonder building” with energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly features.

In a simple gathering held on September 5, UP Institute of Creative Writing (UP-ICW) director Prof. Jose Y. Dalisay, Jr. introduced Pia V. Benosa to University Professor Emeritus Emerenciana Arcellana, the widow of the late National Artist, Francisco Arcellana. Benosa is this year’s Francisco Arcellana Scholar for Creative Writing.

The UP Diliman Department of History documents UP’s recent history as a contribution to the UP Centennial. In a forum held on August 27, 2008 titled “The University of the Philippines in the Time of People Power” held at the Claro M. Recto Conference Room at Rizal Hall in UP Diliman, professors presented an overview of their works that will constitute the sequel to the book University of the Philippines: The First 75 Years, edited by Dr. Oscar Alfonso and published during UP’s Diamond Anniversary in 1983.

Documenting their contributions to illustrate UP’s history of nurturing entrepreneurs in a book titled Iskolar ng Bayan Gives Back, the Enterprising Way is a fitting tribute to them and the University that nurtured them.

UP Pep Squad wins UAAP Cheerdance Competition

On September 7, 2008, members of the UP Pep Squad were once more hailed as the champions of the Samsung UAAP Cheerdance Competition after giving a spectacular and awe-inspiring performance to a record crowd of around 23,000 spectators at the Araneta Coliseum.
