Francis Paolo M. Quina and Ynna Abuan

The season for literary awards has come and gone, and once again UP alumni, faculty members, and workshop fellows have cornered the lion’s share of the medals for 2009.

Free Press Literary Awards
UP’s winning streak began on August 28, 2009 with the awarding ceremonies of the 101st Philippines Free Press Literary Awards at Carpaccio in Makati City.

UP National Writers Workshop (NWW) fellow Arkaye Kierulf led the roster of winners for his poem “Textbook Statistics.” Second place went to UP alumnus Sid Gomez Hildawa for his poem, “Poet Talks to an Old Movie,” which was published posthumously. Hildawa passed away last year due to complications of a viral infection. Rounding out the winners for the poetry category was UPNWW fellow Mikael Co for his poem “Mebuyen.”

In the short story category workshop fellow Menchu Aquino Sarmiento won second place for her story, “Marita Pangan,” and faculty member John Bengan placed third for his story, “Bad Heart.” Bengan tied with Sasha Martinez.

Gawad Pambansang Alagad ni Balagtas
The following night, the Unyon ng mga Manunulat sa Pilipinas (UMPIL) handed out the Gawad Pambansang Alagad ni Balagtas during its 35th National Convention held at the GSIS Museo ng Sining at the Cultural Center of the Philippines Complex.

The Gawad is awarded in recognition of outstanding Filipino writers’ lifetime achievements. This year, the title was conferred on UPLB professor Dr. Paulino B. Zafaralla for the Ilocano essay, and former Dean of the UPD College of Social Sciences and Philosophy Dr. Zeus A. Salazar for the essay. Four others received the Gawad.

Both Aguila and Evasco won their fifth 1st place win this year in the annual competition.
