Criteria for the UP Alumni Association Awards

In all of the following categories the GENERAL CRITERIA for the Open Nomination should be considered:

  • moral character
  • outstanding achievement in his/her field of endeavor/specialization which is verifiable not only by mere claims by nominee
  • he/she made a "difference" for the good of the local community or country
If finally selected, the awardee must attend the presentation ceremonies in order to personally receive the award. If, for no valid reasons, he or she is not able to attend, he or she may receive the award the next year or in subsequent years.

Most Distinguished Alumnus and/or Alumna Award(s)

The nominee must have attained national, and possibly international prestige, which has brought honor and distinction to the University and country.

The lifetime achievements of the nominee will be considered, which means that he/she must be outstanding in at least several professional fields or areas of endeavor in order to deserve the award of most distinguished alumnus/alumna.

Outstanding Professionals Awards in various fields

The nominee must have attained national, and preferably international recognition in the particular field for which he/she has been nominated.

The more recent achievements, particularly within the past decade, or a very outstanding recent achievement, will be given priority over achievements, long past.

Special Recognition Award(s)

Special Recognition Award(s) is granted to an alumnus, or alumna, who, through special outstanding efforts or achievements during the past year, gave honor and prestige to his/her profession, to the University, to him/herself personally and benefited the community and nation.

As example in this case are Professor Jerome Bailen of the Department of Anthropology and Dr. Raquel del Rosario-Fortun of the College of Medicine who were each presented the Special Recognition Award in 1996. They selflessly and voluntarily offered their services to the Quezon City Government in undertaking forensic analysis of the dead victims of the Ozone Disco Fire and managed to identify many unclaimed bodies through sheer determination and manifestation of highest degree of professional skills.

This award may likewise honor a group of alumni, that meets the aforementioned criteria.

Thus, the Special Recognition Award is distinct and different from the Professional Award".

Community Service (Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao) Awards

The nominee must have a record of outstanding and distinguished service in the community where he/she presently resides and have lived for at least ten years. Beneficiary testimonial should be obtained wherever or whenever possible.

The nominee must not have been abroad at any one time during this ten-year period for the sole purpose of working for a foreign firm or establishment, except when this was in fulfillment and part of his/her work assignment.

Lifetime Distinguished Achievement Award

Lifetime Distinguished Achievement Award will be granted to alumni, who may not have received any of the traditional UPAA "outstanding awards" granted annually but yet cumulatively have through the years achieved or rendered meritorious distinguished service, contribution or professional practice that gave prestige to the University, to their profession and to themselves as alumni.

Given the character of this award, alumni who have retired from University service (yet may still be very active), may merit higher rating points in this regard. They should be outstanding citizens who lead exemplary lives.

UPAA Service Awards

The nominee must have rendered meritorious service to the U.P. Alumni Association directly or through a special project of the Association within a recently reasonable period.

UPAA Outstanding Chapter Awards

The award is open to all accredited UPAA Chapters, one each for locally-based chapter and foreign-based chapter. The basic criterion is "service to fellow men, the country and the University."

Outstanding Graduates Awards (Male/Female)

The nominee must be of good moral character with no disciplinary action against him/her in the past, and one who has a potential for leadership and service to the University and country. His/her grade average and participation in organized student activities will be given considerable weight in the selection.
