COVID-19 Clinical Management: The Cebu Experience

| Written by Fred Dabu

To help Filipinos courageously face the COVID-19 pandemic, the UP webinar series, “STOP COVID DEATHS: Clinical Management Updates,” is hosted by the University of the Philippines, in partnership with the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) and the UP Manila National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Telehealth Center, every Friday from 12nn to 2pm.

Cebu, the country’s Queen City of the South, was cited by UP professors and fellows of the OCTA research group of experts as the “second major battleground” in the country’s fight against COVID-19. As of June 12, Cebu has 4,228 cases representing 17% of the country’s total, and has already outpaced Quezon City with the highest number of cases in an urban LGU jurisdiction.

The webinar on June 19 aims to provide valuable lessons on the clinical management of COVID-19 in Cebu. Dr. Mitzi Marie Chua, ICC Chair of the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City, will talk on how health professionals are handling COVID-19 cases while keeping the death rate low. Dr. Chua will also share insights from hospitals and LGUs on how to keep the health systems of islands prepared for responding to moderate and severe cases of COVID-19.
